"Joan's Jazz Jam" premiered on MediaOne's New Hampshire Cable Network in the fall of 1996 following three years of fits and starts on public access channels throughout Northern New England. The show was originally filmed in small coffeehouses and library basements and focused on educating local viewers about the roots and development of jazz music. But since making the switch to MediaOne, the half-hour also focuses on the present, becoming a showcase for the best jazz musicians the area has to offer..
Each show features a New England area jazz musician sitting in with Joan and her house band, performing a mix of originals and classic standards. The house musicians include touring professionals like pianist Tony Zano, bassist John Hunter and drummer Les Harris Jr. Regular viewers of the show have enjoyed both the performances of the regulars and the opportunity to listen in on their talented guest neighbors. The show has also expanded its reach beyond its New England roots, playing in markets as distant as Jefferson City, Missouri and as large as New York City. In 1997 the show was named a national finalist for the Cable Television Public Affairs Association's Beacon Award.
